The domestic benchmark plunged over 6 per cent last week as the government extended the lockdown for another two weeks in an attempt to arrest the spread of coronavirus. Meanwhile, weak quarterly results from India Inc also kept investors on the edge.

How to Find New Stocks

April was another topsy-turvy month for stocks, as coronavirus fears — alongside concerns about an impending recession and sky-high unemployment rates — continued to mount all over the globe. With a number of countries and U. Below I provide updates on some of the penny stocks I've featured in this column over the past few months and introduce some new low-priced equities I'm keeping my eyes on.

Some of the set-ups I describe below may no longer be relevant or intact as of the time you read this article. Please conduct your own due diligence. Many stocks mentioned here were also discussed in the Peter Leeds Newsletter. Peter may own shares in some of the investments mentioned, in which case that fact will be clearly indicated.

Please note that penny stocks are notoriously volatile. I continue to like Smith Micro stock a lot and believe that the drop will be temporary and reverse itself over the month of May.

In my opinion, this is a good entry point for this high-potential application software firm. But you know what they say about the higher they climb, the harder they fall.

Even at this lower price, I'm still optimistic about Eros stock and believe that its fortunes will climb again. If, however, you're the kind of investor who dislikes roller-coaster-ride volatility , this stock is probably not for you. One has only to look at the firm's charts to see that Eros stock tends to see dizzying highs and breakneck reversals. In fact, I think nearly all of the precious metals stocks will flourish in the current economic environment.

AMRS , a biotech and specialty chemicals firm, would no doubt be listed among those names. And I have a strong suspicion that it will make the same journey northward it did over and Granted, the economic context right now is of course very different from the previous times the stock dropped and then soared.

COVID and a recession have taken a huge toll on most equities — particularly low-priced penny stocks. But even factoring in the challenging economic environment, we think Amyris is an interesting proposition. Consequently, a company using one of Amyris' compounds in its products will pay royalties to Amyris every time that product is sold.

In addition, Amyris has its fingers in a bunch of different pies, including popular beauty line Biossance a top seller at Sephora , a zero-cal sweetener, CBD products, and most recently, wipes and hand sanitizers.

To say the company's product offering is diverse would be an understatement. The Biossance venture might give some investors pause, given consumers' shrinking wallets right now. Investors may also be reassured by looking over Amyris' mostly excellent financials. With consumers set to be under quarantine for at least another few months, companies may be pouring money into promoting their online shopping experience, in my opinion. After all, there's no question that internet usage has gone up as the coronavirus rates have risen, with people scouring the internet for the latest news on the illness … not to mention seeking to cure the boredom of being stuck inside.

In between watching "Tiger King" and "Ozark," people all over the world are glued to their phones, tablets, and computers. They're for all intents and purposes a captive audience.

Now, obviously, with unemployment at record highs, shopping will likely be way down from pre-coronavirus levels. But this doesn't mean that some of the biggest blue-chip companies won't do their utmost to win over as many consumers' hearts and wallets as possible.

And Harte Hanks, Inc. HHS prides itself on its ability to help companies do just that. Hartke Hanks may nevertheless be a stock to watch in the months ahead. If you're a dean or senior-level academic administrator looking to get your university or college to run like a tight ship, you might count on Zovio Inc.

ZVO to help make things more efficient. For example, instead of having to pay graduate students to administer an exam, students take the test online using Zovio's software. Zovio also offers educational and training services to corporate employers.

Think coding bootcamps, industry-specific educational workshops, and other learning opportunities that can take an employee's skills all the way from the Stone Age to our internet-centered one. By focusing on these activities in both the university and corporate sectors, Zovio has been promising double-digit revenue growth and low-double-digit EBITDA over the next three years.

Cash per share at 2. I think we could easily see it go further if the group is able to keep up the momentum. Schwab's research pages point out the exchange on which a stock trades, which will keep you informed of the inherent risk.

There are a variety of platforms available; the StreetSmart platforms have customizable charting and streaming real-time quotes. Schwab does not charge trading commissions on all stocks including penny stocks and ETFs. As I wrote in my last "Penny Stocks to Watch" column for Investopedia, I believe it's still too early to call the bottom of this market.

It's doubtful to me that the free-market capitalism which has characterized investing over the past 10 years or so will ever return to the stock markets.

And until all the smoke is cleared, I will be wary of any "comebacks. Penny stocks are volatile and can generate catastrophic losses.
