I've used a CapitolOne credit card all over Asia for the last 10 years and they do not have a conversion fee PLUS their exchange rate has always been very good.
I've used the card in almost every Southeast Asian Country, including India. My understanding is that credit cards are not very widely used in Japan , especially in small shops and restaurants--has this been the experience of other TripAdvisor travellers? That's also what I've been given to understand too - CC are accepted in hotels and department stores and some restaurants and travel companies but not in smaller shops.
Japan is more a cash economy with less acceptance of credit cards. We were able to use our credit card more places in Japan than we thought we would, but not as much as in the USA and Europe.
