I know this question has been asked several times but I haven't seem to have found the answer I am looking for. I plan on taking cash USD to Japan and from the looks of it people seem to recommend converting once in japan? I keep up with the market and economy news so I know the value of the dollar is up against the yen. I don't wanna be ripped off when converting mone so where is the best place I can convert my USD to yen? I have heard airport conversion rates are horrible.
Make sure you transfer some before you go - many places in Japan will only accept cash so you don't want to be stuck. Generally the airport conversion rates aren't too different from those in cities - they are far more convenient though.
I would recommend getting a little bit of cash exchanged into Yen before you arrive or at the airport and then getting a global currency or travel card VISA or MasterCard enabled - these cards lock in your exchange rate and you can use them at any of the ATM's, as well as using it as a credit card for purchases, which is great for paying for hotels and more expensive items - saves you carrying around your cash and this way you know exactly how much you are paying as the exchange rate is locked in.
I recall a discussion about Australian currency cards with good rates, but the ones by Travelex in the US have rather high fees. I favor cash or travelers checks as a backup, plus a Visa and a Mastercard. With the advent of ATMs that is not what most travelers do. It's not the case in Japan. Airports and banks in cities offer identical rates. In general, you don't have to worry about getting ripped off in Japan. Only place I wouldn't exchange cash or TCs is at a hotel.
I am not talking about changing money at a bank at the airport. I am talking about "exchange booths" if they exist in Japan. Folks see signs saying "money exchange" and don't bother to check the rates. Almost all exchange booths in airports in Japan are operated by banks. Many things are different in Japan.
You'll see once you come over here. From my experience, money changers aren't too common in Japan unlike other countries. Most people would recommend you to banks or the post office, and you'd normally need to fill up forms and wait in line. I would recommend just withdrawing using your ATM card at or the Japan postal bank, it's the most convenient way. The net rates less bank fees are still favorable. Interesting to know that exchange booths in the airport are operated by banks.
I have not read about that and wonder what sorts of rates they are giving? It would be interesting to compare those to the rates given by the bank exchange booths in the airport.
