This edition of the Index , which evaluates the situation for journalists each year in countries and territories, suggests that the next ten years will be pivotal for press freedom because of converging crises affecting the future of journalism: a geopolitical crisis due to the aggressiveness of authoritarian regimes ; a technological crisis due to a lack of democratic guarantees ; a democratic crisis due to polarisation and repressive policies ; a crisis of trust due to suspicion and even hatred of the media ; and an economic crisis impoverishing quality journalism.
The Index of Economic Freedom is an annual index and ranking created in by The Heritage Foundation and The Wall Street Journal to measure the degree of economic freedom in the world's nations. The creators of the index took an approach similar to Adam Smith's in The Wealth of Nations , that "basic institutions that protect the liberty of individuals to pursue their own economic interests result in greater prosperity for the larger society".
