As explained in previous lessons, crude oil is one of the energy commodities that are traded on the NYMEX. Its symbol is CL. It is low sulfur, and so, therefore, is given the nickname sweet crude. Every contract represents 1, barrels, which is the equivalent of 42, gallons of oil. The delivery point for crude oil under this contract is what's known as FOB, or free on board, or delivered to the seller's facilities at Cushing, Oklahoma and to any pipeline or storage facility with access to Cushing Storage, TEPPCO, or Equilon pipelines.

Signs made of a pipe and valve on the major highways near town proclaim Cushing to be the "Pipeline Crossroads of the World", and the town is surrounded by several tank farms. Oil storage became big business in and , when the supply glut in the oil market led to situation where oil futures were higher priced than their spot price. Investors can choose to take profits or losses prior to the oil-delivery date. Alternatively, they can leave the contract in place and take physical delivery of the oil at an "officially designated delivery point" in the United States; this delivery point is usually Cushing.
In April of , it was lack of storage capacity at Cushing which turned WTI petroleum futures contracts negative for the first time in history. The bottleneck at Cushing's giant storage hub distorted benchmark US oil prices for many years. In a large stockpile of oil at the facility was caused largely because Valero Energy Corp. The Eagle North pipeline reactivated in , added offtake capacity to Cushing by connecting Valero's oil refinery in Ardmore, Oklahoma with Cushing's cheap crude oil.
This should have resulted in boosting WTI prices which were discounted against Brent crude oil because of the glut.

Analysts that closely track oil inventories at the Cushing terminal predict midstream companies by the end of next year will have the ability to move more oil out of the terminal than can be brought in. Still, much of the information provided by a Genscape webinar last week illustrates that the terminal, a collection of companies that store and ship crude and condensates, continues to play an important role in storing and distributing oil and other liquids to downstream users.
Crude oil inventories at Cushing ticked up slightly to 36 million barrels for the week ending on April 6, but still hovered near lows not seen in several years. Throughout the oil market downturn that began in and lasted through much of , inventories at Cushing bounced around roughly between 50 and 65 million barrels. But there is more to the story. But the physical oil upon which WTI is based is no longer moving to Cushing, at least not the way it did in the past.
